Formula E drivers have stressed the importance of London being a part of the all-electric championship’s calendar, ahead of the final race at Battersea Park.
The 2015/2016 Formula E season will conclude in London this weekend with a double-header, but it will also be the final race at the Battersea street track.
Earlier this year it was confirmed that an agreement had been made between Formula E and Wandsworth Council for this season’s event to be the last at the venue.
A draft calendar was reported in May and did not feature a race in London but Formula E drivers believe it is crucial the series visits the British capital.
“London is one of the top cities in the world, there are plenty of places to race here in London,” championship leader Lucas di Grassi said.
“It doesn’t need to only be in Battersea Park, there are many other places in London where we could race. I really hope London comes back even as soon as season three.”
MS Amlin Andretti’s Simona de Silvestro told Grand Prix Times: “I think it is really important, Formula E really needs to go to cities like London, Paris – where a racing series would never really go.
“Formula E has this aspect; it would be great to see the championship in all those big cities. That’s a great thing.”
NEXTEV’s Oliver Turvey also commented on his home event, saying: “Yeah, to race in London, it is one of the biggest and greatest cities in the world.
“To have the finale here last year with the double header, we saw what a great event it was. I am sure it will be this year, it’s close in the championship battle.
“Racing [in London] is important not only for British drivers but for all the drivers and teams. Hopefully we can have another race in London in the future.”
