Daniel Ricciardo was fastest for Red Bull Racing in second practice for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Red Bull racer clocked a 1m14.607s on a set of Pirelli’s new ultra-soft compound to end Thursday over half a second clear of the two Mercedes team-mates.

Ricciardo’s quick lap was four tenths faster than last year’s pole time and a second off Sebastian Vettel’s outright pole record from 2011.

Lewis Hamilton, fastest in the morning session, was second, with team-mate Nico Rosberg a further four tenths adrift in third position.

Max Verstappen was fourth, the only other driver to lap within a second of his team-mate’s session-topping time.

The Toro Rosso duo of Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz were fifth and sixth, ahead of  Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Sergio Perez in the Force India.

Vettel was ninth, but spun twice, damaging a rear-wing end-plate when he tagged the barriers at Mirabeau and suffering a puncture after a brush with Ste Devote wall.

Jenson Button recovered from his brush with a loose manhole cover in first practice to end the day in 10th for McLaren.

Romain Grosjean clouted the barriers at the exit of the tunnel and was fortunate to continue, while Rio Haryanto and Kevin Magnussen both crashed out of the session.

Haryanto lost his Manor under braking for the Nouvelle Chicane, crashing heavily and prompting a VSC.

Just moments after the VSC was cleared, and his team-mate hit the track in his repaired car after a crash in the morning, Magnussen buried the nose of his Renault into the tyres at Anthony Noghes.
