Fernando Alonso has been deemed fit to race by the FIA at this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, after missing the last round in Bahrain.

The McLaren driver suffered a pneumothorax and broken ribs after his huge crash during the 2016 season opener in Australia.

He was not cleared to compete in Bahrain after medical checks, with Stoffel Vandoorne replacing him and finishing in 10th place.

But following tests by the FIA at the Shanghai International Circuit on Thursday, Alonso has now been provisionally deemed fit to race at this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.

However, he will have to complete further checks after Friday’s first practice session to determine whether he will be able to participate in the rest of the weekend.

"The stewards have taken advice from the FIA Medical Delegate, who in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Chinese Grand Prix and the driver's doctors advise that he considers the driver provisionally fit to take part in the event," the FIA statement read.

It added: "He is instructed by the FIA Medical Delegate and CMO to undergo a further examination immediately following FP1 to determine his further eligibility to take part in the remainder of the event."
