Alexander Rossi will race for Andretti Autosport in this year's IndyCar series following the team's decision to merge its fourth car with Bryan Herta Autosport's #98 entry.
Rossi was left without a seat in Formula 1 after Manor opted to sign Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto for the 2016 season, leaving the American driver to explore other options in both single seaters and endurance racing.
Following the merger between Andretti and Bryan Herta Autosport for a fourth entry in IndyCar this year, Rossi has now secured the seat previously occupied by Gabby Chaves, and will make his debut in the series at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 13.
"I'm very much looking forward to making my IndyCar Series debut this season and am proud to be racing with a team of such high calibre and pedigree as that of Andretti Autosport,” Rossi said.
“As a racer through and through, I cannot wait to get started; our goal is to be competitive immediately at the first race in St. Petersburg."
Andretti Autosport CEO Michael Andretti added: "We’re really excited to have Alexander join the team. His credentials speak for his ability and we’re confident he’ll transition seamlessly into IndyCar racing. It’s neat to have the last three American F1 drivers in 25 years to be under one roof, I think it speaks to the level of talent we have."
Rossi came close to joining Dale Coyne Racing in IndyCar last year before opting to spend another season in GP2, as well as joining Manor for five of the last seven grands prix of the F1 campaign.
