Nico Rosberg turned the tables on Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, topping the session by almost half a second, switching positions compared to FP1 which saw the Briton leading by a similar gap.
The Mercedes pair were well ahead of nearest rival Ferrari however, as Sebastian Vettel could only get within 0.960 seconds of the Mercedes, whilst Kimi Raikkonen was a further two-tenths off.
Daniel Ricciardo was fifth ahead of Valtteri Bottas who was sixth quickest after a spin at Pinheinho.
Meanwhile the red flags came out for Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard’s Honda engine blew up with a puff of smoke, whilst the team warned Jenson Button of the issue.
