Honda believe they’ll be able to provide McLaren with a competitive engine in the second half of the season when they introduce a major performance boost.
The Japanese engine supplier has not only struggled with reliability, but power too, making it an almost impossible job for Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso to score points.
The pair sit near the bottom of the drivers’ championship with four and zero points respectively, but Honda hope that’ll change.
With seven development tokens to play with, Honda’s motorsport boss Yasuhisa Arai, is confident they’ll see a major step in performance after the summer break.
“We have seven tokens still remaining, so we will apply those in the second half of the season after the summer shutdown,” Arai told Motorsport.
“We will replace many parts to improve the horsepower, so we have good harvest and good systems. And I think we can catch up this season,” he claimed.
Meanwhile Arai says they also have “many ideas” on how to develop their power unit ahead of the 2016 season.
“We already have a good plan,” he said. “With the tokens for next year, we already have many ideas [on how to improve].”
