Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff reckons the team radio clampdown will prove “complex and controversial” to both understand and govern.
The FIA announced this week that all performance related team radio calls would be banned in an effort to make sure the driver is making the key calls during a race, rather than just following instructions.
Wolff expects some controversy to come from the change as engineers are so used to providing mountains of data that it’s become second nature.
“It has been confirmed that we will now see less radio traffic,” Wolff noted. “This is a complex and controversial decision which will require a significant effort from the teams to understand how best we can work around it.
“The directive is not yet fully clear and there will inevitably be some controversy, so it will need further clarification as to how much the essential on-track procedures will be affected – particularly before the start of the race.”
The FIA has informed the teams that they will not be lenient and have also confirmed that code words will also be considered illegal.
