Max Chilton and Sergio Perez have both been blamed for causing collisions during the Canadian Grand Prix and, subsequently, have been handed penalties by the race stewards.
Max Chilton was blamed for hitting his team-mate Jules Bianchi on the opening lap which brought out the safety car. The stewards handed the Briton a three-place grid penalty for the next event in Austria.
Chilton claimed his innocence afterwards, but the stewards didn’t agree with his view.
“He [Bianchi] braked later – and he was only in front of me because he braked so late,” explained Chilton. “There was nothing I could have done.
“I am not going to back off down the inside because he is my team-mate, he should have seen me.”
Sergio Perez meanwhile has been handed a five-place grid drop for Austria after he was deemed to have been the guilty party during a last-lap crash with Felipe Massa which cost the pair fourth and fifth.
The race stewards believe Perez moved across on Massa as the Brazilian attempted a pass, resulting in a high-speed collision which registered at 27G on the FIA’s safety equipment.
Both drivers were unharmed and underwent standard medical checks.
