Sebastian Vettel will take a grid penalty for changing his gearbox after the team found it to be a hardware issue which stopped him during qualifying.
The German left the pit lane to complete his first run in the top-ten shootout, but came to a stop at turn three where he reported a loss of gears.
That forced him out of qualifying and brought out the red flags.
He will start 15th on the grid as a result of a five-place penalty after his team confirmed a new gearbox would be required to start Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.
Talking about what happened, he said: “In Q3 I left the pits and was in first gear to leave. I went up to second gear and lost drive in second gear, went for third and had third so I decided to keep going because it’s possible to do a lap without second gear around here, but by Turn 1 I was stuck in fifth gear and couldn’t go up or down and lost drive and had to stop.”
