Michael Schumacher is in a “critical condition” following a skiing accident in the French Alps resort of Meribel.

The 44-year-old was thought to have sustained a minor knock to the head, but his condition has worsened in the last few hours after he was transferred from Moutiers hospital by helicopter to a much larger facility in Grenoble.

Whilst he was conscious after the incident and during his transfer to Moutiers, the German fell into a coma when he was transferred to Grenoble according to a statement.

“Mr. Schumacher was admitted to the University Hospital of Grenoble at 12:40pm (CET), following a skiing accident occurred in Méribel in the late morning.

“He was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival,” confirmed the hospital.

His management had remained relatively silent, but in the last hour confirmed he is in a “critical condition, has a head trauma and is in a coma and requires immediate neurosurgical treatment.”

It’s been confirmed that one of the doctors treating Schumacher is close friend Professor Gerard Saillan, who travelled to the hospital immediately after hearing the news. He is an expert in brain and spine injuries and has previously treated Schumacher.

His wife and two children are present at the hospital. Friend and former boss at both Ferrari and Mercedes, Ross Brawn, is also present.

Further updates will be provided during a press conference at 10am (UK time) on Monday.

This story will be constantly updated with confirmed news only.
