The announcement that the final race of the season will be worth double points in 2014 has been met with almost unanimous negativity amongst Formula 1 fans.

It seems the drivers aren’t so keen on the idea either with current champion Sebastian Vettel branding the idea “absurd”.

“This is absurd and punishes those who have worked hard for a whole season,” he said.

“I guess they do not understand old traditions in Formula 1.”

Had the systems been in place last year, Vettel would have lost out on the championship to Fernando Alonso.

The German’s new team-mate Daniel Ricciardo also questioned the idea.

“Seems to be pretty bizarre,” he wrote on Twitter. “Not sure who came up with that one…”

Meanwhile, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko revealed that Christian Horner voted against the idea – which was originally to award double points at the last four races – but was overturned by rival team bosses, the FIA and FOM representatives.

“At first it was planned to be awarded double points for the last four races,” he added. “We were against it but our team boss Christian Horner was overruled.”
