Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says it would be nice to see Mark Webber retire from Formula 1 with one last race win in Brazil, but admitted Sebastian Vettel is unlikely to move over for him.
Webber will join Porsche’s WEC team next season after 11 seasons behind the wheel of an F1 car. Seven of them have been spent at Red Bull and five with Vettel as a team-mate.
Should the German be in a position to help Webber to his tenth career victory, Horner thinks it unlikely he will help and suspects Webber wouldn’t want such a gift.
“It would be great to see him win his final race – what a way to sign out – but Sebastian is going to be going for that record as well,” Horner said.
“As usual it will be a straight fight between the pair of them. Mark would not want to be gifted a win.”
With both championships wrapped up, you’d think Red Bull would relax, but Horner insists they’ll keep pushing until the final race of the season is over.
“You only have to look in the eyes of every single member of the team to see the motivation and desire that still exists,” he added.
“Even though we won the championship in India we have been pushing flat out and, as I have always said, we will continue to do so until the chequered flag in Brazil next weekend.
“The target now is to try to get Mark the third place in the drivers’ championship and see out the season in style.”
Webber currently sits fifth, two points behind Kimi Raikkonen and a further four off Lewis Hamilton.
