Russia will soon have a second home for Formula 1 following the announcement that a new facility will be constructed near the country’s capital, Moscow.
Russia is set to debut on the 2014 calendar when the F1 circus visits Sochi. A street-style circuit is currently under construction in the seaside city which is set to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
However there are no plans for two races in the country, therefore it’s likely Sochi will be stripped of the race after a couple of years before Moscow takes over as the host.
The circuit is aimed at boosting Russia’s international image to attract more tourists and its automobile industry.
German architect and F1 regular Hermann Tilke has been signed to the project which imagines a circuit near the Vnukovo airport, just ten miles outside of Moscow city centre.
It’s expected to be completed around late-2015, whilst the Russian organisers have a contract with Bernie Ecclestone to host F1 until at least 2020.
