McLaren insist they are not neglecting next season despite a certain focus on 2015 which will see various technical changes and the return of Honda as its engine supplier.
The Woking squad have endured a difficult season which has seen them fail to secure a podium as well as losing several key members of its technical staff to rivals.
In response, team principal Martin Whitmarsh has been on a recruitment drive. As of yet, only one of the rumoured ‘several’ new engineers have been announced.
Many of these changes won’t happen until 2015, but managing director Jonathan Neale insists things are happening which will strengthen McLaren for 2014 too.
“If I look at the work going on now with Mercedes and the preparation for next year’s car, then we have quietly been strengthening the team through the course of this year as well,” he said during a Vodafone phone-in.
“We’ve been sorting ourselves out internally and, as you would expect from our organisation, there is a pipeline of things coming through.
“I would say the one story that has broken in the press [with Red Bull’s Peter Prodromou] is probably the furthest away, but there is a lot more happening in the short term.”
