The Nurburgring looks unlikely to host the German Grand Prix in 2013 according to Bernie Ecclestone, despite the 82-year-old saying the opposite just last week.
Ecclestone met with the organisers behind the German venue last Wednesday and it’s believed talks to host the race broke down after it became apparent they wouldn’t have the necessary finances to host the race and pay the sanctioning fee.
In an interview with ESPN, the F1 CEO cast further doubt over Nurburgring’s future, but insisted the German Grand Prix would go ahead – most likely at the Hockenheim venue.
“We have got a German Grand Prix but we don’t know where it is going to be,” he said. “We have got the race pencilled in. It’s on the calendar.
“We can decide it once the season has started.”
When asked if the Nurburgring would be the most likely host, he replied: “No. The trouble is that the people that used to be there have gone.
“They haven’t got enough money. So we will see.”
