The F1 Times gambling contest between Ryan Wood (Editor) and Daniel Chalmers (Feature Editor) heads to the 11th round at the Hungaroring for the Hungarian GP.
Both men have a budget of £5 to spend on a maximum of 3 different bets relating to the upcoming event. The deadline for these bets to be placed is before the start of the first Friday practise session.
At the end of the season the winner will be the person who has made the most profit, or made the lowest loss.

Bet 1 – Fernando Alonso to win the German GP – £2.00 at 9/2 – Won £11.00
Bet 2 – Felipe Massa to finish on the podium – £2.00 at 7/1
Bet 3 – Exactly 3 cars to retire on lap 1 – £1.00 at 20/1
Daniel Chalmers
Bet 1 – Lewis Hamilton to qualify on pole – £1.00 at 4/1
Bet 2 – Michael Schumacher to win the race – £1.00 each way at 18/1
Bet 3 – Jenson Button to win the race – £1.00 each way at 18/1 – Won £4.60
It turned out to be a very exciting week with both men winning money. The fight for the lead between Button and Alonso had huge implications in the outcome of the betting challenge. If Button had managed to overtake Alonso, Daniel would have had by far his biggest win of the season with Ryan winning nothing.
As it was Button couldn’t pass Alonso. This meant that Ryan won £11.00 for predicting that Alonso would win the race. Although Button didn’t win Daniel still won £4.60 as he had placed an each way bet meaning he would win a fifth of the odds if Jenson finished second or third.
After ten races £50 has been spent by both men. Ryan now has £15.75 worth of profit, whilst Daniel has £28.40 worth of losses. Therefore there is a difference of £44.15 between the two gamblers.
This weekend we are at the Hungaroring for the Hungarian GP. This circuit has very often been described as Monaco without the barriers. The layout is very narrow and twisty and it’s a very busy lap for the drivers with no time to relax.
Generally you can always rely on it being boiling hot in Hungary, so that will be very good for all the teams who prefer hot track temperatures to get the Pirelli tyres working. Although there are some forecasts of thunderstorms on Sunday.
It’s not the easiest track to pass on but with DRS on the pit straight, along with the Pirelli tyres, we should see more action than we have seen in previous years.

Round 11 Hungary

Bet 1 – Lewis Hamilton to win the Hungarian GP – £3.00 at 5/1
McLaren look to have solved some or most of their issues and the car is on the lead pace as demonstrated by Jenson Button in Germany last weekend when he came from sixth, battled traffic, and was at points less than six tenths behind Fernando Alonso.
The outfit has more upgrades for this race and they’re pushing hard to claim the top spot once again. Had Lewis Hamilton not suffered a puncture on lap three, he may well have joined Button in the lead fight.
I reckon it’ll be there race to lose. McLaren have won in Hungary four of the last five times – a pretty impressive record.
Bet 2 – Lewis Hamilton to take pole position for the Hungarian GP – £2.00 at 3/1
I’ve put all my eggs in one basket it seems, that’s how confident I am in McLaren’s, particularly Hamilton’s, potential this race weekend.
The upgraded McLaren looks quick in dry conditions, I’m just hoping the weather gods give us some dry running because it’s been pretty miserable weather at the last few races. If it rains, my money’s as good as gone.

Bet 1 – Lewis Hamilton to win the Hungarian GP – £2.00 at 5/1
McLaren were definitely back on form in Germany. Their huge upgrade made a massive difference and they were a factor for race victory once again. Button ended up getting involved in the battle for victory, despite the fact he started down in sixth place, and had other drivers to battle past in the opening laps.
Although Lewis had a puncture and ended up with a damaged car his pace in clear air was still very strong at times.
In a normal dry qualifying session I think we will see Lewis back to his usual qualifying form. He has qualified in the top three in every dry qualifying this year (last two were wet).
If he has a clean race he has a great chance of winning with the vastly improved race pace of McLaren. The team are bringing more updates to this GP too.
Hungary has been a good track for Lewis in the past with victories in 2007 and 2009.
Bet 2 – Kimi Raikkonen to win the Hungarian GP – £1.50 at 12/1
It’s clear that the race pace of the Lotus is very strong. Kimi produced a brilliant drive in the race in Germany but the problem was he only started in tenth place. If Lotus can get somewhere near the front they can genuinely win a race on merit.
Hungary will be one of their best chances to qualify near the front. The E20 works at it’s best in hot conditions, which they will have a good chance of experiencing in Hungary.
The track layout should suit them too. The E20 has very good traction for the slow corners, and very strong aerodynamics for the long medium speed corners.
Bet 3 – Narain Karthikeyan to be the first retirement of the race – £1.50 at 11/1
Thought I would try a difference type of bet, and the odds in this market are very good. HRT have had three technical retirements so far this season, and a hot race weekend is always a challenge for the backmarker teams on the reliability front.
