McLaren duo earmark Lotus as car to beat

The McLaren duo of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton believe Lotus will be the car to beat in Monaco this weekend after Romain Grosjean showed impressive pace during practice.

Grosjean managed to place second quickest in both FP1 and FP2, but despite Jenson Button going quickest in second practice, it’s Lotus who he believes has the upper hand.

“The cars that looked very fast for me were the Lotus,” he said on Friday. “Their runs whenever they are out look very competitive, so I’d say the Lotus is the car to beat so far this weekend.”

Kimi Raikkonen only completed a handful of laps leaving him 24th and 19th respectively, but despite this, Hamilton agrees with Button and says Lotus are one of a few teams to watch on Saturday and Sunday.

“The Lotus is massively quick. I’m not really quite sure what Red Bull is up to, but I have no doubts they’ll be quick. The Ferrari is very quick,” he added.

“The same teams are quick this weekend. I think everyone’s got the chance to fight for the front end, and it’s all about making sure you get out there at the right time, you get the temperature into your tyres and your brakes, and you nail it on the lap that you get.”
