Argentina is closing in on a deal for Formula 1 to return to the country from 2013, president Cristina Fernandez announced on Thursday.
She hinted that a three-year deal had been agreed with Bernie Ecclestone’s FOM, and that the race would take place in November, likely after the between the US and Brazilian rounds.
“We are closing [the deal],” said Fernandez. “For three years, in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the city of Mar del Plata.
“For us it will be very important because after football, racing is the second favourite sport for Argentineans. Getting Formula 1 back to Argentina is something we deserve in order to be able to show the things we have.”
Currently there is only one circuit located in Mar de Plata, a seaside resort some 400km from Buenos Aires. The Autódromo Ciudad de Mar del Plata would require heavy modifications if it is the chosen location.
F1 last visited Argentina in 1998 at the Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez in Buenos Aires.
