Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi were simply not good enough to challenge for a race seat at Red Bull Racing, that’s the view of their former boss, Franz Tost.
The duo raced for Toro Rosso in 2011 but were dropped at the end of the season for Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne.
Tost says the decision to drop the pair was made in light of their performances, which weren’t on par with what would be expected from a future Red Bull driver.
“When we speak about the ‘right stuff’ for Red Bull Racing we are talking about a double world championship-winning team, which means that drivers who get elevated there must have the ability to win races and championships,” Tost told the official F1 website.
“And it was from that perspective that second thoughts set in when it came to Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari.”
He added: “I’m not saying that they are not fit for Formula 1 as both have shown substantial talent at some races, but it is not enough for Red Bull Racing.”
However, the Italian outfit’s team principal believes they may still have a future in F1 with another team.
“But I could imagine that they could be top drivers somewhere else and have a successful racing career,” he concluded.
