The drag-reduction system could be restricted throughout practice and qualifying, as it is in the race, after Mark Webber revealed a vote amongst all the drivers showed unanimous support for the idea.
Currently the system, which was introduced at the start of 2011 to increase overtaking, can be used unrestricted throughout all three practice sessions and all three qualifying sessions.
However, when it comes to the race, it can only be used within a predetermined zone, or in some cases two zones.
Webber says this should be the case during the entire weekend as it has posed a serious safety threat on at least three occasions.
“There have been a few incidents where people have gone off because they were pushing the boundaries of using DRS,” wrote the Red Bull driver in his BBC column.
“So the drivers are almost unanimous that they would prefer its use outside of the race to be limited,” he added.
“Renault’s Bruno Senna had a crash in Suzuka [in Japan], I had one on Friday in Hungary, and one of my team-mate Sebastian Vettel’s practice crashes was caused by that too.”
Asked where it should be used in practice and qualifying, Webber exolained: “Just in the DRS zone and perhaps a couple of the key straights, and with a restriction on the point at which you can deploy it so you’re not too close to the exit of a corner.”
