Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez have both been handed three-place grid penalties for the Indian Grand Prix after they failed to slow enough under yellow flags during FP1.
The McLaren driver went on to set his and the sessions quickest lap under yellows, the result of Pastor Maldonado’s engine failure which saw the Williams driver stop on-track.
A statement from the FIA said Hamilton was penalised for “ignoring double waved yellow flags at turn 16 whilst marshalls were in close proximity to the track.”
Hamilton says he accepts full responsibility for the penalty and had no one to blame but himself.
“I was engaging the DRS when the yellow flags were out and you’re not allowed to,” he said.
“I went in there and I put my hands up and said I accept whatever penalty they give, and that’s what they gave me.”
“I have no one else to blame, it was only me driving.”
Both Hamilton and Perez can start the Indian GP no higher than fourth.
