Lewis Hamilton has admitted that Sebastian Vettel’s 1:22.275 qualifying time, which secured the young German pole position for the Italian GP, was “untouchable.”
Hamilton claimed on Saturday that he could challenge Red Bull for pole, but a half second gap was clearly out of reach, according to the McLaren driver.
“I didn’t have half a second in the bag,” he said in the post-qualifying press conference. Though he could have been closer had it not been for a small mistake at turn three. “I think we could have got another couple of tenths out of the car.
“The guys did a fantastic job to bring the new components to the circuit this weekend and clearly we’re really competitive as both me and Jenson [Button] are up here, but Sebastian was mega quick today.
“We looked like we would be quite competitive throughout the weekend, but that last lap, it was untouchable for me.”
