Michael Schumacher has applauded the new regulations introduced for the 2011 season, including the drag-reduction system, KERS and the Pirelli tyres.
The seven-time world champion believes it has made overtaking easier which allows the faster car to be ahead, rather than constantly stuck behind another, slower car – as has been the case over the past few years.
“To me there is more justice as the quicker driver should be in front and it is more spectacular,” said the German. “There is fantastic fighting and I have to say I’ve enjoyed it big time,” he admitted, despite some less than exciting results.
The Mercedes driver highlighted last years Abu Dhabi GP as the perfect case for the new regulations. The final race of the season saw a faster Fernando Alonso unable to pass Vitaly Petrov, leaving the Spaniard unable to fight for his third title.
“Fernando was clearly quicker and was fighting for the championship but was stuck in traffic in a normal race situation,” explained Schumacher.
“That used to be our life, if you were not so much quicker, or not quicker at the right point on the track, you couldn’t pass.
“Now you still need to be quicker than the guy in front of you but you don’t need to be miles quicker and you can play with various systems in order to make overtaking possible.”
The 42-year-old claims the various aids to be a ‘mega-success’.
“It’s a day-and-night of a difference and it’s a mega success what we have been seeing. Not only in Shanghai but in the previous races too.
“It is fairer as the quicker driver should be in front not the one that is just driving in front because of tactical reasons. To me there is more justice.
“It is more spectacular. There is fantastic fighting and I have been in the middle of that in the last grand prix. I had lots of action and I had to say I enjoyed it big time.”
