Red Bull are hoping an upgrade to their KERS unit will improve the systems reliability after suffering from several issues during the first three races of the season.
Mark Webber hasn’t been able to use the system at all this year after the unit failed to work during the Malaysian GP and, in China, it went into ‘safe mode’ before the race even started, rendering it near useless.
Sebastian Vettel has been able to use it, but only intermittently. With McLaren closing the gap to the front, it is now vital that the current championship leaders get to grips with the energy recovery system.
It’s hoped a major upgrade for the next race in Turkey, in three weeks time, will improve its reliability.
“We have got another upgrade of KERS coming for Turkey,” said team principal Christian Horner.
“It is getting better and better as we get more understanding of the system and more mileage on it.
“So I am confident that the niggly issues that we have with it, we have fixes in the pipeline.”
It’s thought the biggest factor in the unit failing is to do with overheating after Red Bull design guru, Adrian Newey, opted to package it tightly within the car, as to not interfere with the RB7’s aerodynamics.
