Full Report:
An uneventful start as the order stayed the same as the cars entered turn three. Sebastian Vettel put to rest any starting troubles as he got the quickest getaway.
Felipe Massa immediately pitted on the first lap, deciding that a long strategy was his best bet for a good finish.
Some minor contact for Nick Heidfeld saw him pit for a new nosecone, however the team put on three softs and one hard which delayed his stop as the team corrected their error.
Vitantonio Liuzzi also made contact and stopped on track. That led to the first safety car and several drivers including Mark Webber to enter the pits.
The restart was fairly mundane as the drivers filed through the first two corners in order. Felipe Massa jumped to 15th whilst Webber fought through from 11th to 9th, taking Glock and Kobayashi.
Jarno Trulli pitted for a new rear right tyre after a puncture.
Contact between Nico Hulkenberg and Vitaly Petrov gave the under pressure Virgin some space as both drivers took the run-off area.
As the race settled, the big challenge for the mid-field was to pass Glock as a train of cars, six within three seconds, gathered behind him.
Lap 16 saw several cars make a move, including Sutil, Hulkenberg, Massa and Petrov, pushing Glock into 15th.
Hamilton pitted on lap 29 for hard tyres, dropping to eigth in the process allowing Webber to get ahead. The move by McLaren led to both Ferrari and Red Bull stopping for leaders Alonso and Vettel. A small error by the German led to a slow getaway just as Button pulled in for his first stop.
Kobayashi made a mistake on lap 33, hitting the wall and just seconds later Bruno Senna ran into the side of the stricken Sauber leading to a second safety car.
On the restart a collision between Webber and Hamilton left the Brit with his second DNF in two races – with the FIA duly announcing the incident would be under investigation.
At the same corner just a lap later, Schumacher and Heidfeld came together, ending the Sauber driver’s comeback race whilst Schumacher suffered minor front-wing damage – the FIA also announcing an investigation into this incident.
The FIA confirmed almost 20 minutes after each that no further action would be taken on both accounts.
Last dash moves from Robert Kubica moved him up from 12th to 7th as he glided past Sebastien Buemi, team-mate Petrov, Massa, Hulkenberg and Sutil for six points all within five laps.
A close battle between second place man Vettel and first placed Alonso saw the two finish just two tenths apart.
Heikki Kovalainen had an exciting end to the race as he finished lap 60 of 61 on fire, before grabbing a fire extinguisher himself and putting the fire out on the start/finish straight.
