Mark Webber took his fourth victory of the season at the Hungarian GP which saw some chaotic action in the pits after a safety car period.
Fernando Alonso followed up his first place in Germany with a second place in Budapest ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who was penalised by the FIA for backing the pack up behind the safety car.
Felipe Massa rounded a Ferrari 2-4 ahead of Vitaly Petrov for Renault.
Race Report: Sebastian Vettel managed to get a good start and keep his lead into the first corner but the dirty side of grid caused his team-mate, Mark Webber, to bog down and loose a place to Fernando Alonso.
Lewis Hamilton lost a place to Vitaly Petrov but managed to claim it back on lap two after taking the Russian around the outside of the second corner.
Jenson Button had the poorest start on the grid, loosing four places into the first turn.
The first retiree of the race came on lap three – Alguersuari’s engine gave up in the intense heat of the Hungarian sun.
The race settled down for ten or so laps before the first pit-stop. Button came in on lap 15 for a fresh set of tyres before an incident involving Vitantonio Liuzzi’s front-wing caused the safety car to make an appearance.
That led to mayhem in the pits as the majority of the grid pitted – Vettel made a late decision jumping the kerbs to enter the pits, whilst Felipe Massa lost out to Hamilton – the Brit gaining fourth.
Nico Rosberg became the second retiree after his wheel came loose immediately after leaving his pit-box. The wheel careered down the pit-lane just missing the Sauber and Williams mechanics.
The next incident happened just seconds later as Robert Kubica left his pit-box into the path of Adrian Sutil – the two collided heavily. That incident would lead to a ten second stop and go penalty for the Pole but instead he chose to retire from the race.
Hamilton retired on lap 24 with a suspected gearing failure. During that time the FIA announced that Vettel would have to serve a drive-through penalty for exceeding ten car lengths behind the safety car.
Vettel served his penalty on lap 31 and managed to stay in third ahead of Massa.
With Webber not pitting until lap 43, it allowed him to open up a 24 second gap over second placed man Alonso, to keep his lead.
Much of the latter action in the race was concentrated on Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher with the pass coming on lap 66. The move saw Schumacher pushing Barrichello to within an inch of the pit wall to which Barrichello replied over the radio: “Black Flag, that was terrible!”
The FIA took the same view and took the decision to investigate the move after the race.
Webber crossed the line on lap 70 to take his fourth win of the season.
