Hamilton: Small championship lead is ‘strange’

Lewis Hamilton believes his relatively small championship lead is ‘strange’ having secured two race wins and three second placed finishes.

The McLaren driver has a 12 point lead over team-mate Jenson Button, whom has also secured two race wins, although only finished on the podium five times compared to Hamilton’s six.

“It’s strange,” he told the Telegraph. “I’ve had four solid races – two wins and two second places – and yet I’m only 12 points ahead,” explained the Brit, who as mentioned above, actually has three second placed finishes.

He is keen to distance himself from Button, who, at the start of the year was warned that going up against the 25-year-old would be akin to enetering the Lion’s den

“We’ll have to see how it goes but if I can increase that gap a bit I’ll certainly be happier,” Hamilton added.

Team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, says Hamilton’s small lead isn’t enough just yet to label him their ‘de facto No 1’.

“Not yet,” replied Whitmarsh. “I’m sure Jenson hasn’t given way to Lewis’s championship charge. He’ll want to win this weekend, he’ll want to move that momentum back in his favour – and that’s how it should be.”
