Sir Stirling Moss has admitted he doesn’t understand Michael Schumacher’s decision to return to F1 at the age of 41, branding the German as ‘past it’.
Moss, who is recovering from a horrific accident at his home back in March told the Metro newspaper that Schumacher will only damage his achievements.
When asked if he could understand the Mercedes drivers decision to return, Sir Stirling said: “In a word, no.
“He’s a highly intelligent bloke, and I really can’t see… all he’s going to do is damage his achievements.
“People are going to say he’s past it now, which he probably is.”
Schumacher has failed to beat his teammate Nico Rosberg on all occasions and currently trails his fellow German by 40 points. Moss reckons this is the first time Schumacher has had serious competition from within his own team.
“We’ve never seen Michael with a number two who’s been comparable. He had Rubens Barrichello who no doubt is an extremely good driver, but not necessarily a winner.
Moss continued: “People say he’s the best because he has seven world titles, but that doesn’t mean anything really.
“Well, it does mean something – it’s a hell of an achievement – but it doesn’t mean he’s the greatest ever.”
