Lewis Hamilton has put to rest the disappointment he had after the McLaren team made a strategy error which saw them pit him twice, yet they decided to leave teammate, Button out until the very end after his first stop.
“The team has explained to me their reasoning behind the second pitstop,” Lewis told his official website. “I can understand what they were trying to do, in trying to cover both Mark [Webber] and Nico [Rosberg] for later in the race.”
With the new regulations, teams are still discovering the wear rates of the newer tyres. In 2009 the softer compound tyre wouldn’t have lasted 30 laps, let alone the 52 Button completed in Melbourne.
This is an area Hamilton knows the team are working on to understand better, and the results from Melbourne will only help the team further.
“We are still learning about this year’s tyres and the degradation, and perhaps we over-estimated the wear that the frontrunners were expecting to suffer. It’s something you learn from, and we’ll use that knowledge to help us improve throughout this season.”
Despite Hamilton’s lower than possible result, he is still very proud of the job he did in Australia. He managed to come sixth after qualifying 11th, however, he was at one point P3.
“I’m very proud of the job I did in Australia,” Lewis added.
