Fernando Alonso will eventually win a title at McLaren, the team he will remain with for the rest of his Formula 1 career, according to Gerhard Berger.
The former McLaren-Honda driver, speaking to BBC Sport, fully expects the Spaniard to jump back into the MP4-30 at the first race without any lasting effects of his recent test crash.
“Fernando is such an experienced driver, he will deal with it in a good way and I don’t think it’s going to have any effect on him. He will be ready to go racing again.”
Meanwhile the Austrian doesn’t believe Alonso is looking to jump ship when a seat at Mercedes or Red Bull becomes available, and fully expects him to end his F1 career with the Woking team.
“I think once he signed up for McLaren-Honda, he knows there is going to be a learning period. I’m sure that he is going to be part of this learning,” he added.
“Once this is done, I’m sure he wants to take all the fruits from the learning period. I don’t think it must be an intention to jump around teams.”
As for success together, Berger believes that will come with time and it should see Alonso crownd a three-time champion sooner rather than later.
“Alonso has some extreme high talent in certain areas, not just in driving skills but in the way he runs the politics.”
When asked if he’d secure another title, he replied: “Yes – he is a complete driver. He should have more championships because he is a big champion. The way that he drives, the killing instinct that he has, he’s capable of winning more than two championships.”
