Red Bull will likely start the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from the pitlane if they fail to convince the FIA that their front-wing is legal, after it failed scrutineering on Saturday evening.
Daniel Ricciardo qualified fifth with team-mate Sebastian Vettel behind in sixth, but both those positions could be lost following the outcome of an investigation.
The FIA’s technical delegate Jo Bauer has referred the matter to the race stewards after examining the front-wing on the RB10. Bauer found two flaps were designed to flex outside of the allowed tolderance under force which could provide a significant advantage.
“When checking the front-wing of car numbers 01 and 03 it was found that the front-wing flaps were designed to flex under aerodynamic load,” read a statement from Bauer.
“In my opinion this is not in compliance with Article 3.15 of the Formula One Technical Regulations. Therefore I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”
As a result, a team representative from Red Bull must attend the stewards office at 20:00 local time to hear the case. Should the stewards uphold Bauer’s findings, then they must change the wing and start from the pitlane, or alternatively race under appeal.
