Perez could escape penalty as FIA launches review

Sergio Perez could have his Canadian Grand Prix penalty dropped after the FIA confirmed it would renew the decision to award him a five-place penalty for the Austrian GP this weekend.

The Force India driver was blamed for moving off the racing line and taking Felipe Massa by surprise which caused the pair to tangle and end up in the barriers on the final lap of the race.

However Force India has written to the FIA with what it believes is new evidence which confirms Perez wasn’t to blame, whilst raising the point that the Canadian stewards never interviewed the Mexican as he was in hospital.

Article 13.10 of the FIA International Sporting Code gives teams the opportunity to ask for a review if they believe they have new evidence.

The review will take place on Friday morning at 9am and will involve the Austrian stewards. If they decide Force India’s ‘new evidence’ is important, a second meeting will take place at 4pm to review the incident itself.

Both Williams and Force India will be involved in the second meeting should it take place. The stewards have the power to remove the penalty, back the original decision or penalise Massa instead.

A poll on our website to place the blame is almost split 50/50.
