Niki Lauda
Lauda has one of the most inspirational stories among them all. He was famous for his immense talent on the track and his straightforward approach off-track. Alex Zanardi
Zanardi has one of the most inspirational recovery stories in motorsports. While most sports injuries can be fixed, this wasn’t Zanardi’s case. The injuries he suffered in the 2001 accident were so severe that they changed his life completely. If they were in Zanardi’s shoes, other people would have probably curled up and asked themselves why the world hates them. The terrifying accident had Zanardi lose both his legs and 75% of his blood volume. And yet, this didn’t stop him from returning to racing – he designed custom legs and continued accomplishing great things. Zanardi became one of the top-hand cyclists in the history of sports, a 4-time Paralympic Champion and a 12-time World Champion.
Unfortunately, Zanardi also suffered a traumatic brain injury in a para cycling accident, which again put his life at risk. For many, Zanardi is a hero and a true legend – and it’s no wonder why, as the Italian racer didn’t let misfortune stay in the way of following his passion. Zanardi never stopped believing that he would get back to racing again, and that’s what he also encouraged others to do – never give up hope and their dreams, no matter what.
Felipe Massa
Massa’s story proves that recovering from devastating accidents and returning to your dream is possible. In 2009, Felipe Massa was unexpectedly struck by a suspension spring, leaving him unconscious behind the wheel.
Massa was instantly rushed to the hospital, where doctors identified a skull fracture that required immediate surgery. At first, his condition was described as life-threatening, even if it was stable. However, Massa got better quickly, and doctors released him from the hospital a week later.
Massa didn’t go back to racing right away; it was only after several examinations that he could return to what he loved. His first race after the accident was in 2010, when he finished in second place. Was Massa’s recovery a miracle? Was he lucky to be in good hands at the hospital?
