Following on from the well-attended IndyCar test session at Iowa Speedway earlier in the week, eight drivers took to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Thursday to work on their road course setups.
The series will race on the 2.44-mile circuit again in late July, and a few teams used a break in the schedule to log some laps while the temperatures were hot enough to mimic the likely conditions for the race.
After the allotted eight hours were complete, it was Colton Herta who had logged the fastest lap time of the day at 1:10.5574.
Herta is coming off a thrilling win around the course earlier in the season, beating his rivals with an impressive performance in the wet.
Andretti team-mate Alexander Rossi was only slightly slower, and related that a bird collided with his Aeroscreen during the session, but caused no damage.
The other two Andretti drivers were also on track, as each tried out major changes with their setups that are typically not possible during a compressed race weekend.
Both Arrow McLaren SP drivers were also at the test, putting the third and fourth fastest times of the day. Pato O’Ward ran the most laps out of anyone, with 94.
Following a confirmation from the team earlier in the day, O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist both have extended contracts with McLaren going forward, although it is still unknown if the latter will have a seat in IndyCar, or if he will move to Formula E from 2023.
Kyle Kirkwood and Simona De Silvestro rounded out those present for the test, gathering info for AJ Foyt Racing and Paretta Autosport respectively.
With almost every team running testing of some sort over the past week, all will be looking ahead a few short days to the start of the second half of the season at Mid-Ohio on the first weekend of July.
