Formula 2 driver Amaury Cordeel is set to sit out the next Formula 2 round at Silverstone after picking up his 12th penalty point of the 2022 season.
Cordeel was deemed to have caused a collision with Campos Racing’s Olli Caldwell during Sunday’s Feature Race in Baku.
A statement from the Stewards states that they determined “Car 14 [Caldwell] was behind Car 25 [Cordeel] between Turns 3 and 4.
“Car 14 chose an outside line and was alongside Car 25 on the straight approaching Turn 4. Car 25 was focused on the cars ahead and did not see Car 14 on his left.
“Car 25 moved across to the left making contact with Car 14 and forcing them both into the wall. Both cars retired. Car 25 was deemed to be wholly at fault for causing the collision.”
The punishment handed from the Stewards was a three-place grid penalty for the next race the driver participates in, as well as a penalty point on his licence.
Cordeel entered the race weekend with 11 points on his Super Licence, having amassed them at previous rounds.
F2’s sporting regulations state that “if a driver accrues 12 penalty points in a race, he will be suspended for the following Event. After the suspension has been issued, 12 points will be removed.”
A bulk of Cordeel’s penalty points came in Saudi Arabia and Imola, where he picked up nine across the two race weekends.
He then was issued two more in Barcelona, placing him on the brink of a ban ahead of the Monaco round.
However, he departed Monaco without being issued any points, before being punished for the collision with Caldwell in Baku.
Cordeel is the second driver to pick up 12 penalty points in Formula 2 in the last number of years, after Mahaveer Ragunathan was banned for the Austrian event in 2019.
Van Amersfoort Racing will be allowed to sign a replacement driver for the next round.
