Button: ‘I’m not near the end of my F1 career yet’

Jenson Button is hoping to continue in Formula 1 after 2014, but doesn’t yet have a contract in place after only signing a one-year extension with McLaren last year.

The Briton insists his career isn’t “near the end” yet despite reaching the age of 34, making him the oldest and most experienced on the grid with over 240 race starts.

“People have said ‘Ah, he’s 34, end of your contract, what are you going to do at the end of this year?’,” Button told the Telegraph.

“I’ve had a great career. But for me it’s definitely not near the end.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a contract, if a team don’t think you’re doing a good enough job then they’ll get rid of you, and if you’re doing a great job they’ll want you for 10 years more.”

When asked if he’d consider switching teams if McLaren wasn’t an option for 2015, he replied: “I’m here at McLaren and that’s where I’m happy to be. I’m not going to get worried either way.”

His comments came after his third place finish at the Australian GP, which he described as a positive way to cap an emotional weekend following the death of his father.

“I’ll be honest: this weekend has been an emotional one for me, and the support I’ve had has been brilliant,” he added.

“That being the case, it would have been a real bonus if I could have celebrated my third place from the podium, alongside Nico and Kevin. But I really feel for Daniel, who drove a great race in his first race for his new team, in front of his home crowd.”
