After the first practice session from Barber Motorsports Park on Friday, it was Colton Herta who was able to log the fastest time of the day.

Seemingly always in contention at the sharp end of the field, Herta proved once again that he can roll his car off the hauler and get to business straight away.

In fact, the entire Andretti Autosport contingent looked to be on from, with three of the top four positions taken by the team that has had troubles locking down results lately.

Alexander Rossi and Romain Grosjean will hope to remain as competitive as they showed on Friday throughout the rest of the weekend.

Strongest season yet for Pato O’Ward has been ‘overshadowed’ by Alex Palou

Alex Palou in his Chip Ganassi Racing Honda was the spoiler in the top positions, and was able to lock in the second best lap of the afternoon.

Scott McLaughlin slotting into the fifth position just as the session ended, continuing his momentum that he has carried from the first race of the season.

Drivers noted that the track was unusually slippery on Friday, and the undulating 2.38-mile course demanded a bit more finesse than usual.

The weather was pleasant with just a few clouds dotting the skies, but it may be the only such session of the weekend.

Scattered rain is predicted to move into the area on Saturday afternoon, and more consistent rain is forecast for Sunday, meaning Friday’s practice session may provide less value than usual.

AJ Foyt Racing will be one team that hopes that the changing weather brings better results as all three members of the team finished 20th or worse.

The next session will be Saturday morning, before a midday knockout qualifying session to set the order for the 90-lap race on Sunday.
