Following multiple crashes at the Grand Prix of Long Beach last weekend, Jimmie Johnson has undergone minor surgery on his right hand to correct a fracture.
The fracture occurred during Johnson’s first trip into the tire barriers during Friday’s practice, when the spinning steering wheel whipped into his hand at the moment of impact.
He was seen favoring his hand immediately after the crash, and was forced to wear a small custom carbon fiber splint throughout the rest of the race weekend.
His Chip Ganassi Racing crew even modified the shift paddles on his steering wheel to allow him to compete in every session.
Johnson had another trip into the tire wall in Sunday’s race, but he was able to take his hands completely off the wheel before the impact and suffered no further injury to his hand.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Johnson revealed that the surgery to fix his fractured hand was completed just after the race weekend was over.
He also showed off his bandaged hand while sitting in his home simulator, indicating that he is already back to work while recovering.
Johnson still expects to be able to compete in the next race from Barber Motorsports Park as well as a test session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on April 20-21.
