Marc Marquez will skip this weekend’s Argentina Grand Prix as he continues to recover from the diplopia he suffered in a heavy crash in Indonesia a week ago.
The six-time premier class champion was forced to miss the first Indonesian GP since 1997 after suffering both a concussion as well as a return of the diplopia that caused him to forego the final two races of the 2021 campaign.
With his concussion expected to have been sorted by the time he reached the Termas de Rio Honda circuit in Argentina, the question mark rested on whether his diplopia would clear up in time for him to take to the start.
Unfortunately for the Spaniard he has been ruled unfit following a medical check-up with his trusted ophthalmologist Dr Sanchez Dalmau on Monday according to a statement released by his Honda team on Tuesday morning, though the specialist team were at least left encouraged after seeing “favourable” signs of improvement.
With the Americas GP at the Circuit of the Americas following just seven days after Argentina, Marquez is in a race against time to see whether he can recover sufficiently to try and score his eighth win in nine starts at the venue.
“The Repsol Honda Team rider has already shown very favourable improvements with his diplopia after visiting the Hospital Clínic and an examination from Dr. Sánchez Dalmau,” began Honda’s statement.
“Marc Marquez visited his ophthalmologist, Dr. Sánchez Dalmau, at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona yesterday, Monday, where he underwent his second medical check-up after the crash in Warm Up for the Indonesian GP a week ago.
“In this new examination, Dr. Sánchez Dalmau confirmed that Marc Marquez’s diplopia shows a notable improvement and reaffirms that the progression of his vision is very favourable.
“As happened with the last episode of diplopia, Marc Marquez will continue to carry out a conservative treatment regime with regular check-ups.
“The Repsol Honda Team rider will not take part in the next round of the MotoGP World Championship that takes place this weekend in Argentina as he continues his recovery.”
