Michael Schumacher remains in a “very critical condition” following a skiing accident which happened on Sunday morning in the French Alps resort of Meribel.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion was airlifted to a local hospital in Moutiers, before being transferred to Grenoble where he arrived in a coma.
His condition has yet to approve according to his doctor, who confirmed during a press conference on Monday morning that he underwent surgery to release pressure on his brain.
“He remains in an artificial coma,” explained Professor Jean-Francois Payen. “He is undergoing treatment to limit the damage to his brain and we are trying to release the pressure in his head.
“His situation is critical, it definitely is critical.
“He has only been operated on once so far, we’re not sure if he will require further operations. We cannot speculate as to what the outcome will be. We have to wait and see.”
The German was wearing a helmet at the time of accident and Payen believes that was critical to his survival.
“His helmet, with the violence with which his head hit the ground, definitely helped. Without it, he wouldn’t be here now.
“At this moment, we don’t have much more information.”
