Maximillian Gunther was sixth in an impressive showing for Nissan, while world champion Nyck de Vries could on manage seventh for Mercedes EQ.

Sergio Sette Camara was 11th, with Stoffel Vandoorne a lowly twelfth. Oliver Turvey took 13th, but championship leader Edoardo Mortarta finished the session 14th, leaving him and his team with a lot of work to do if they want to retain the lead of the championship.

Mahindra’s Oliver Rowland was 15th, just over seven tenths slower than Lotterer. The two Jaguars could only find pace for 16th and 17th, Sam Bird leading Mitch Evans, while Antonio Giovinazzi was 18th, looking a lot more comfortable than he did in Diriyah.

Alexander Sims was 19th, with Lucas di Grassi in 20th. Rookies Dan Ticktum and Oliver Askew took 21st and 22nd.
