The green flag that will signal the start of this year’s Indianapolis 500 will travel the world to multiple large-scale events in the months leading up to the 106th running of the great race in May.

Much like the Olympic torch when it travels through the host nation’s cities ahead of each event, the Green Flag Relay will bring added hype and awareness of the iconic race for an extended period of time.

The first stop on the journey already happened last week, when the flag was present for the Race of Champions event in Sweden.

The entire list of events to which the green flag will travel is not known yet, but it is expected to make its second appearance at this weekend’s NFL Super Bowl.

“The green flag is one of the most iconic symbols in all of motorsports, and nothing is more exciting or meaningful to our fans than seeing it wave at the beginning of the world’s greatest race,” said Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles.

“This year, it will be even more special knowing how many renowned global events and landmarks the flag will have journeyed to leading up to such an important moment.”

The NTT IndyCar Series has set up a dedicated website to allow fans to follow along with the flag’s progress, which can be reached at www.IMS.com/GreenFlagRelay.

The well-travelled flag will be waved to start the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 29.
