Alonso dismisses link to Red Bull as ‘rumour’

Fernando Alonso is the latest driver linked to the vacant seat at Red Bull next season, with claims his manager met with Christian Horner to discuss the idea in Hungary.

Whilst that may be true, it isn’t unusual for the Spaniard’s manager, Luis Garcia Abad, to be seen at Red Bull, as he also manages Carlos Sainz Jnr who is part of Red Bull’s young driver programme and drives for Horner’s GP3 team.

Whilst the Red Bull team principal admits they’re “not stuck for choice” in their quest to find a team-mate for Sebastian Vettel, Alonso himself has dismissed the speculation.

“I don’t think so,” he said when asked if his manager was in discussion with Red Bull about 2014.

“Not that I know of. I’m concentrating on the championship. These are rumours that always [come about] in August, it’s a good time for rumours because we have four weeks with no Formula 1 race.”

Alonso is contracted to Ferrari until at least 2016, according to team principal Stefano Domenicali.

Vettel meanwhile says he would prefer good friend Kimi Raikkonen over the Ferrari man.

“I’d prefer Kimi [Raikkonen],” he said. “Nothing against Fernando, I really respect him a lot as a driver but I think I respect Kimi on-track and off-track, because he’s always been very straight with me and from that point of view it might be a bit easier.”
