Massa too inconsistent to race at Ferrari

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa isn’t consistent enough to drive for a top team such as Ferrari, according to former designer turned BBC technical analyst Gary Anderson.

Massa has less than half of team-mate Fernando Alonso’s points tally of 123. He has also made at least one high-profile error during each of the past four race weekends, including crashes in Britain, Canada and Monaco.

That has led former Jordan, Stewart and Jaguar designer Anderson to question Massa’s place at Ferrari, but he insists the Brazilian is quick enough, he’s just not consistent enough.

“I don’t think Massa is too slow; I think he is too inconsistent,” he told BBC. “On his day, he is a very quick driver, but the problem is you never know when that day is going to be. He doesn’t know the level of the car.

“He over-drives a lot, and that leads to mistakes. When the car is good, he’s quick and he can be consistent and get good results. But he has become too inconsistent to continue at a team of the level of Ferrari.”

Anderson also questioned Ferrari’s personnel and believes they need to strengthen their design team – something he is certain they’ll do with the addiiton of James Allison.

“There are a lack of ideas in how to take the car forward. They are not sure why they had a bad car last year and not sure why they have a reasonable car this year. When you have that situation, how do you go forward?

“They need more people to generate more ideas,” he added. “Former Lotus technical director James Allison is going there and he will be a good addition. But he has to go there with the technical control to operate in his way. If they tie his hands, they are wasting their time.”
