‘Humble’ Lopez after back-to-back titles: ‘I’m a lucky guy’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Jose Maria Lopez has reflected on his second consecutive WEC world title with Toyota Gazoo Racing, saying he is ‘lucky’ to be part of the Japanese team’s success.

Lopez locked up the world title alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway on Saturday night by finishing second overall in the Eight Hours of Bahrain.

It marks the second time the Argentinean driver has won multiple world championships in two different sereis, also capturing three consecutive titles in the WTCC between 2014 and 2016.

In the post-race press conference, Lopez reflected on his success and what it meant to win a second title with Toyota.

“I couldn’t have done this without Mike and Kamui,” Lopez spoke of his team-mates. “Of course, they always did a great job. Honestly, I feel quite humble. I think I’m a lucky guy, to be here, to be part of this group, to be able to still to achieve championships and wins. It’s a privilege to represent my country as well.”

Lopez’ two WEC titles, alongside his three consecutive World Touring Car titles, puts him on level ground in terms of world championships with five-time Formula One world champion Juan Manuel Fangio.

“Fangio did it in Formula One, so you can’t compare, but to be able to wave my flag around the world. It’s always a privilege.”

Lopez’ team-mate, Mike Conway, also achieved something of a personal milestone. With his second title, Conway becomes the first British driver to win back-to-back world endurance titles since legendary driver Derek Bell achieved the same feat in 1985 and 1986.

“It feels really good to join the club of double World Champions,” said Conway. “To win the title two times in a row is an amazing feeling, and finally getting Le Mans this year really does top off the season.

“I’m proud to achieve this with Kamui and José who have done an amazing job all year, just like everyone on our crew. We were pushed as hard as ever by car #8 so well done to them today.

“It’s always a pleasure to race with them and it’s going to be strange not to have Kazuki behind the wheel of that car. It’s been great fun working with him.”
