Nico Hulkenberg says he will not pursue a prospective move to the IndyCar Series following a recent test in the United States.

Hulkenberg has not competed full-time in motorsport since departing Renault’s Formula 1 team at the end of the 2019 season.

He currently holds a reserve position for Aston Martin in Formula 1 having made three stand-in appearances in 2020 under its Racing Point guise.

Hulkenberg travelled to Barber Motorsports Park after the recent US Grand Prix to test IndyCar machinery with Arrow McLaren SP.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown outlined that Hulkenberg was a prime candidate for the third car that the squad is aiming to run at select events in 2022 ahead of a possible full-time 2023 program.

But on Thursday Hulkenberg ruled himself out of a move.

“It was exciting to test an IndyCar two weeks ago and I am grateful to Arrow McLaren SP for this opportunity,” Hulkenberg wrote on his social media pages.

“However for personal reasons I decided not to go ahead with it. [I’ll] keep you posted on my future plans.”

Arrow McLaren SP has already confirmed Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist as its 2022 driver line-up.
