Sebastien Bourdais does not yet have a contract for next season, and has revealed that he is pinning his hopes on staying at AJ Foyt Racing.
The four-time CART series champion made his full time return to IndyCar this season after being dropped from Dale Coyne racing at the end of 2019.
Bourdais found a ride with AJ Foyt at the end of 2020, and was able to continue that relationship this season, with Dalton Kellett as his team-mate.
When asked about next season, the Frenchman said that he does not yet have a contract for next season, but he is not looking around at the available seats that some other teams have.
“Larry [Foyt, President of AJ Foyt Enterprises] is trying to find the money to put it together, and that’s the intention,” Bourdais told Motorsport Week when asked if he will stay with the same team next year.
“There’s a lot of pieces that need to fall together to make it possible. We’re not really focused on it. We’re just doing the best we can this year.
“If it can continue, that’d be great. If it doesn’t, that’s just what it is.”
When pressed if he has been talking with other teams, Bourdais clarified, “No. It’s going to be AJ Foyt Racing or nothing.”
The 42-year-old has had a largely successful career already, competing in the top levels of motor racing since 2003, including a two-year stint in Formula 1 driving for Toro Rosso.
His last win came in the 2018 IndyCar season opener, and he has struggled recently to get results that he feels he is capable of.
As other driver announcements are made seemingly every week, it remains to be seen if a deal can be put together that would allow Bourdais to remain on the IndyCar grid in 2022.
