Formula 3 cancels Austin round, finale moves to Sochi

Formula 3’s 2021 season will now conclude in Russia, rather than the United States, following a late revision to the calendar.

Formula 3’s seven-round campaign had been set to conclude for the first time at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas.

But that trip has now been cancelled owing to logistical changes that have impacted on the overall costs of the planned event.

The United States still has tight entry restrictions and ongoing visa-related difficulties owing to the pandemic.

Formula 3 will now join Formula 1 and Formula 2 at the Sochi Autodrom later this month.

It will be the first time that the two junior categories have raced at the same venue this year owing to the revised calendar structure that was introduced for 2021.

Formula 2 and Formula 3 will both still feature three races at Sochi.

Sochi previously held Formula 3’s season finale in 2019.

“I want to thank F1 and the FIA, our teams and everyone involved, including the Sochi promoters, for agreeing on such short notice to this change,” said CEO Bruno Michel.

“We are pleased to bring our two categories to Russia again, but I am also sorry for not taking F3 to Austin this year, and I’m looking forward to racing there in the future.”
