Lorenzo Colombo drove the best race of his FIA Formula 3 career so far by clinching Race 1 victory for Campos at the Hungaroring.

The Italian begun the race second before passing reverse-grid pole-sitter Jonny Edgar on the eighth lap to see him hold on for a maiden win.

Edgar was able to maintain the lead for the first seven laps, as there were hardly any major position changes during the opening stages.

The top ten by this point were Edgar, Colombo, Ayumu Iwasa, Olli Caldwell, Logan Sargeant, Clement Novalak, Alex Smolyar, Dennis Hauger, David Schumacher, Jack Doohan and Matteo Nannini.

After being overtaken by Colombo, Edgar slowed to a halt with mechanical trouble, robbing the British driver of a first victory.

The Carlin driver’s retirement also promoted Iwasa and Caldwell up to second and third.

Championship leader Hauger pulled off one of the few overtakes during the race by passing Schumacher around the outside into Turn 1 on Lap 14 to move up to seventh position.

A couple of tours later and Frederik Vesti slowed from ninth place with electrical issues and stopping at the first corner, enough to bring out the Safety Car.

Colombo kept hold of the lead on the restart with the top five remaining unchanged.

Further behind, Hauger completed another excellent manoeuvre by overtaking Smolyar around the outside into the first bend on the restart to go up another position into sixth.

Doohan did the same with his team-mate Schumacher, although the Australian would be re-passed by the German for eighth on the last lap.

Colombo came home to pick up not only his first win but his first podium and points as well, plus the extra two points for the fastest lap.

Iwasa and Caldwell completed the podium places ahead of Sargeant and Novalak.

Hauger was sixth in front of Smolyar, Schumacher, Doohan and Nannini rounding out the top ten points scorers.

12th place Enzo Fittipaldi will be on reverse-grid pole later in the afternoon for Race 2, with Roman Stanek, who crossed the line 11th, will be alongside him on the front row. The top 12 finishers for Race 1 get reversed for the Race 2 grid.

Hauger’s lead in the championship is cut down slightly to 40 points, with Olli Caldwell moving up to second thanks to his latest podium.

The second race of the FIA Formula 3 weekend in Hungary begins at 17:55 track time.
