Dennis Hauger stormed his way through the field from 12th on the grid to a sensational victory in Race 1 at the Red Bull Ring in FIA Formula 3.

The Red Bull Junior driver was up to third before watching Clement Novalak and Matteo Nannini collide ahead before capitalising and going to pick up his second win of the season.

The start saw Logan Sargeant on reverse-grid pole ahead of Nannini. However, it was the Italian who got the jump off the line to take the lead.

Lap 9 saw the beginning of a sequence of lead changes lap by lap with Sargeant overtaking at Turn 4 on the inside to move back into first position.

Four laps later and the sequence temporarily ended with Nannini at the front. Novalak was second ahead of Sargeant, Hauger and Olli Caldwell.

Despite running in the points, Arthur Leclerc ran off the track following a problem with the car. The Monegasque returned to the pits and would go no further, meaning a back of the grid start for the brother of Charles in Race 2.

Seven laps remaining and Hauger passed Sargeant for third, with Caldwell following suit on the next tour.

Three laps later and Nannini attempted a move round the outside of Novalak into Turn 4 but the pair collided on the exit, resulting in a puncture for the Frenchman but Nannini was able to continue.

That allowed Hauger to inherit the lead and Caldwell completed a one-two at the chequered flag.

Sargeant achieved his first podium of the season in third in front of Victor Martins, Jak Crawford and Caio Collet.

Rounding out the top-ten points scorers were Jack Doohan, Nannini, Ayumu Iwasa and Alex Smolyar. The two fastest lap points also went to Hauger.

Jonny Edgar’s 12th place results in him starting Race 2 on reverse-grid pole alongside Enzo Fittipaldi, who crossed the line 11th.

Hauger’s win means he extends his championship lead over second-place Martins to 19 points.

Race 2 of the weekend for F3 begins at 17:45 track time following Formula 1 qualifying.
